26th July - WYMOMDHAM LIONS CHARITY SWIMS 2010

This October will see the 5th running of Wymondham Lions Charity Swim (which seems to get better every year!). This year we are trying to raise as much money as possible for E.A.C.H (East Anglian Children’s Hospice). Yet again we are running 2 events.

The Primary School Swim to be held on 9th October 2010 at Wymondham College and the main event at Wymondham Leisure Centre on 16th October 2010. Wymondham Lions are looking for teams of 6 people to swim in relay for 50 minutes. As usual there will be a trophy for most laps swam and a prize for the most money raised.

The main event takes place at Wymondham Leisure Centre from 6.00pm on October 16th 2010 and is open to the following three categories, Primary School, Secondary School, and Adult Fun Swimmers. Usually this is a fun filled evening. We had thirteen teams entered last year so the challenge goes out to one and all to come and join us for a fun filled night of fund raising!

26th July - The Regal Experience

The Regal Experience Group present a Marilyn Monroe tribute show on Sunday 5th September (2.30pm) at the Old Wymondham Regal, now part of the local Ex-Services’ Club.

The main feature will be Niagara – an excellent suspense thriller shot in breathtaking locations in 1952. In the movie Marilyn sizzles with sex appeal and is the nymphomaniac wife of a wizened war veteran, played by Joseph Cotton – an unlikely pairing! Jean Peters also stars. Although Marilyn had already made brief appearances in 20 films, among them The Asphalt Jungle and Monkey Business, the dramatic Niagara was a milestone in her career with her first “attracting increasingly frenzied attention.”

Personality girl, film star and model Melita Morgan, who has played both Marilyn and Madonna in cabaret, publicity shoots and movies all over the world, will be making a personal appearance. Among her film credits is the Hollywood-produced Mr Lonely (2007), for which she attended the launch at the Cannes Film Festival and the London premiere. When the film’s first public screening was held at Norwich’s Cinema City in May 2008 Melita rode up the red carpet on her horse to raise awareness of animal welfare. She is a great personality.

There will also be an exhibition on Marilyn’s exciting movie career.

The supporting documentary film – another one of the group’s specially selected little gems from the British Film Institute – is A Day of One’s Own, which was made in 1956. It follows a selection on women from around the country, who take a day off from their domestic chores and go on a variety of outings - shopping, sightseeing or merely enjoying the peace of the countryside in which Norwich features.

Tickets can be obtained from Maureen Dodman (01953 605593) or Michael Armstrong (01953 603246) and at the Wymondham Heritage Museum. Tickets price - £5 Concessions - £4.

12th July - John Bennett from Wymondham shows how to be a Vocal Local

The How to be a Vocal Local campaign, run by Norfolk County Strategic Partnership, aims to show how easy it is for people to have their say, and highlight how ordinary people who care about their communities are making things happen and making a difference.

John Bennett, from Wymondham, has seen first hand the scars of motorcyclists who had road accidents while not wearing adequate protective clothing. As a result he chose to be a Vocal Local.

The 58-year-old runs the Motorcycle Clothing Centre in Wymondham with his wife, Sue, and wanted to do more to cut down the number of customers he sees with serious damage to their skin from accidents at speeds as low as 15mph.

So the former builder and restaurateur joined the Norfolk Motorcycle Forum, run by Norfolk County Council, which has a major input into road safety campaigns targeted specifically at motorcyclists.

The Forum meets twice a year but stays in regular contact via email, and involves members in decisions about every aspect of motorcycle safety, from how best to promote safety messages to motorcycle training schemes.

John is heavily involved in the high-profile Hugger campaign, which was launched in response to alarming statistics that show motorcyclists make up only 1 per cent of traffic on Norfolk's roads, yet represent a staggering 26 per cent of people killed or seriously injured.

“I’m passionate about promoting bike safety and getting the casualty figures down,” he said.

“You so often see people of all ages riding motorcycles with virtually nothing on – it’s horrifying really, and something needs to be done about it.

“I don’t want to see it become law to wear protective clothing because that would be too restrictive, but we need to do everything we can to highlight that people are running a serious risk of injury, even if they come off at relatively low speeds.

“There’s a huge volume of traffic to contend with now compared to when I was a youngster. There are more dangers and it’s more important than ever that you wear a decent form of protective clothing. There’s no excuse – there are even Kevlar reinforced jeans now!”

John has offered to provide part of his shop for use as a first response medical training centre, and has supplied protective neck tubes to the Hugger campaign which are given to everyone who completes the training course.

“It’s important that more people like myself in the retail sector should take part in campaigns like this,” he added. “Because I’ve been part of it since day one this shop is known as Hugger Central!

“I’d encourage people to be as active as they can and promote the cause. More people need to get behind the campaign and get involved in having their say generally.”

The campaign website www.vocallocal.co.uk provides ideas on other ways people can get involved and become Vocal Locals, from working with neighbours on a local issue, or joining a community group, to giving feedback to councils, police or the local NHS.

Daniel Cox, Chairman of the Norfolk County Strategic Partnership (NCSP) which is running the campaign, said it was vital that people had their say to help shape the places where they live.

“I have spoken to some truly inspirational people who have really helped change people’s lives, and what they’ve all said is that once they knew how to get involved there was no stopping them,” he added.

“By getting involved in decision-making you really can make a difference.”

Caroline Money, County Strategic Partnership officer added: “There are dozens of different ways you can be a Vocal Local, depending on what interests you, how much time you have and how much or little you want to get involved,”

“People can give from just a few hours a month to full-time work, but many employers support vocal locals with time off work for public duties. What’s more, for some of these roles, organisations can pay expenses for travel or childcare so you are not out-of-pocket for taking part.”
