Town Gas Works
The Town Gas works, run by the Wymondham Gas and Coke Company Ltd., opened in 1848 in Station Road near the Fairland (just east of the old A11 road).

Gas was made in the shed on the right, by heating coal, and was stored in a gasometer (which is down in this picture) behind the house on the left.
A second gasometer was added later. Coke and tar was sold at the Gas Works. As well as supplying domestic and business customers, the Gas Works provided street lighting in the town centre in the early part of the twentieth century. The local company was absorbed by the British Gas Light and Coke Company Ltd., and gas production ended at Wymondham when a supply pipeline was installed from the Norwich Gas Works.
