Welcome to the Wymondham Heritage Society and linked Heritage Museum web pages. Our long-established society brings together local people who care about the living history of our town. Monthly meetings provide opportunities to hear speakers on a variety of historical topics and to meet other members; a strong publishing programme of leaflets, articles and books is made possible by the original research carried out by our local historians; our Museum Committee runs our excellent Heritage Museum in the Bridewell. Our environment committee makes comments on planning applications and other matters affecting the historic part of the town.
The society offers many rewarding opportunities to get involved. Work is mainly carried out by the committees, which are always looking for new members able to contribute their ideas. A list is on these pages. The museum always needs stewards or tea room helpers; if you have half a day a month to spare, this might be for you."

The Wymondham Heritage Society, a registered charity, has been much involved with the history and environment of the town for many years. It runs the Wymondham Heritage Museum and its members have a long track record of writing books and pamphlets on a variety of local historical themes which are sold in its shop and by local booksellers.
Its latest, and in some ways its most ambitious, publishing venture is Wymondham: History of a Norfolk Market Town. This new, well illustrated history incorporates much recent research and reflects the increasing interest of local people and visitors in the origins and history of the town. It is the first attempt since 1949 to explore Wymondham’s long and interesting history. Written by a team of experienced local historians who belong to the Society’s History Committee, it tells the story of Wymondham from earliest times to the latest changes to the town and includes:
The establishment of a market
Kett’s Rebellion
The building and the dissolution of the Abbey
The fire of 1615, a serious case of arson
Agriculture
The textile and brush making industries
The coming of the railway
The two World Wars
