‘It’s fun; I wouldn’t keep doing it if it wasn’t fun! We go out and we laugh.’
BeFriends is a local project which enables adults with a learning difficulty to enjoy social activities in the community with the support of a volunteer. It is a project of BUILD, a registered charity established in 1967 and an independent voluntary organisation whose services are aimed at building equality, confidence and opportunity for people with learning difficulties.
BeFriends members and volunteers are matched in a one-to-one partnership according to their interests, hobbies and personalities and it is very important that they have fun together! Activities could include going to the pub, bowling, the cinema, chatting over a coffee, the theatre, going shopping or whatever the partners agree they wish to do together. All this AND we cover volunteer’s expenses! Befriends also hold group activities and social gatherings such as the BUILD annual party and Summer BBQ.
BeFriends is already operating very successfully in Norwich and North Norfolk and we are keen to expand our service. We are currently looking for adult volunteers South Norfolk.
