What are we?
Wymondham Learning Initiative (WLI) is a voluntary, independent, community-based adult learning organisation, the only one of its kind in South Norfolk. We were set up by a group of enthusiastic local Wymondham people in April 2000. Our aim is to encourage more people back into learning and improve local learning opportunities for adults in the Wymondham area. We were registered as a charity (Reg no in 2003).
We are run by a board of eight volunteer trustees who lead the development of the organisation, seek funding for new projects each year and employ the staff who run our programmes.
Where are we based?
In 2002 we were awarded a grant from the National Lottery to improve IT learning in the Wymondham area, and in January 2003 we opened Wymondham Learning Centre in Middleton Street in the town centre. In August 2007 we moved to our current base, another new-build project, at Wymondham High School. As schools are now expected to work towards closer links with their local communities, our plan was to form a partnership with our local high school so that we could combine our interests and outreach and improve the services we can both provide for the local community.
What do we do?
• run Wymondham Learning Centre where we have a bookable IT-based training room for local organisations or learning providers to use
• currently organise a series of six outreach short course learning programmes with a theme of ‘Learning for Health’ in the Wymondham area and five other communities in South Norfolk
• run short courses of basic IT training on request for a number of villages, residential homes or local businesses
• provide bespoke programmes of learning for other local organisations
• run an environment project in partnership with Wymondham High School
• provide, in association with Norfolk Guidance Service, advice and guidance on routes into further learning and work for adults aged 20+ who need to update their skills or change career direction, build their self-confidence or develop their CVs
